This is really a grammar question. It doesn't sound right, but even the news media (tv) is using this phrase now. I'd just like to know, is it correct to say that someone "went missing"?

in their terms is proper cause they are referring the 'went' in a statistics form,but when you say personally this ,the proper word would be ,she is missing.

it is correct when people accept that it is. all language is just a bunch of sounds and the correct form is the form that people speak. so, if we understand it, it is correct, in my opinion. an enlightening discussion of language correctness can be found in steven pinker's book on language instinct in the chapter on language mavens.

honestly
its not defined anywhere
but because of its widespread use, its becoem an idiom and is accepted as fine

lets just hope it doenst come up on a grammar or sat test :-)
