Is it really that necessary?

Can't we teach our own children the skills they learn watching Barney or The DoddleBops?

Do you feel technology is a used more as useful resource or a cop out?

TV is not meant for kids -- even kid cartoons are terribly violent and sexist. I took an ECE class and it talked about the negative effects of TV on kids. If you buy educational programs, videos or DVDs for them I think that is fine - but what is on regular TV is just horrible. They show girls always being week and boys always being strong - it generally reinforces stereotypes. Children under 5 are absorbing everything that is around them - I personally wouldn't want my child absorbing all of the junk that is on TV....I think people just park their kid in front of the TV due to lack of time to spend one on one with them -- I also think that technology can be a wonderful resource if the parent is controlling the materials and viewing it before hand so you know exactly what your child is learning and being exposed to - then i think it can be a useful tool...

I think a copious amount is a cop out for true parenting but I don't feel at all bad about using the occasional educational show to grab 30 minutes to clean up after lunch or do some critical chore that can't wait until nap time. We also have HBO's Classical Baby which I don't think we could live without. One of them is quiet and calm and is a lifesaver on fussy nights or during ear infections and such. We cuddle up on the couch and listen to the nice classical music and watch the pretty calming colors float across the screen. We have however completely changed out TV watching habits when our toddler is even in the room. IE no more CSI in front of her or any other scary stuff.

I do not feel it is necessary for many hours of the day. Maybe an hour a day. Books and games played with your children can teach them many more skills than having them sitting in front of the TV. I feel most of the time that technology is a cop out.

I think as long as it's educational, like the local PBS, or kqed, or even Nick JR it's good for the kids. My kids learned alot from that. You just want to make sure they are not sitting in front of the TV for too long each day. But when they are watching TV, definately make sure it's shows like Sesame Street, Barney, etc.

I think it is acceptable if it is less than 1/2 an hour a day and you are with them interacting with whats happening on the TV. Most of the time it's a cop out for parents.

According to the book "Everything Bad is Good for You," which is an in depth look on who Pop Culture effects society references several studies that prove that watching TV increases several areas of a child's brain. However, it is important on what you choose to watch. Survivor will benefit your child's brain greatly whereas Big Brother will do nothing for them.

The Author, Steven Johnson, will remind you multiple times throughout the book that while Television, Video Games, and the Internet all build your child's brain, you MUST not ignore the value of reading books and good old fashioned experiences with the family.

What it comes down to is that a child benefits from every different medium and that restricting them from one only restricts their mental grown; however overconcentrating on one also restricts their growth (IE a kid who does nothing but zone out in front of the tube and plays video games won't be as mentally well rounded as a child who reads, watches TV, surfs the net, goes on trips with their family, and plays video games).

Allow your child to be well rounded. Us the TV to supplement his or her mental growth, not as the sole focus.

my son is 2 and i restrict tv watching because i don't feel it should be used to entertain him so much. he watches noggin in the mornings, the same few shows, and i actually condone them because he is learning from them. he learned his abc's from moose a. moose at two years old, and yes, i can teach him the abc's, but why not let him pick it up on his own?

i don't think a few shows here and there (educational and appropriate) can hurt a child. i do believe letting your kid watch spongebob and other completely pointless babble will give you nothing more than a bratty tv addicted idiot. yanno, eventually.

My daughter learned enough and got so tired of TV, that she started reading for pleasure by the time she was 7. Has always preferred reading to TV since, and doesn't even own a TV.

I let my Grandson watch a program in the morning, Curious George, and then we sing a video thingy in the afternoon. SO..that's about an hr of tv. I don't think that's too much for him. Motivation is a plus for young minds.

1-1 and 1 1/2 is okay but try to let them watch educational shows like little einsteins, barney,NickJr and all those shows but it isnt necessary you can spend more time with the kid/s if you buy an interactive book and do/help them with with it
