The Mugwumps were a political movement of Republicans who supported Democratic candidate Grover Cleveland in the U.S. Presidential election in 1884. After the election was over, the term Mugwump survived for another decade as an epithet in American politics. Don't be offended, it certainly is a creative and unusual word seldom heard in contemporary language.
