It depends on what her legs look like.

I talk to them if I can think of something. If I'm with my kids, my 7yo will talk to anything that moves and certain things that don't, so I usually get brought into that conversation. One woman kept sh-ing her because she had something important to read. Hello! It's not a library! Then on the next leg, I got back from the bathroom and someone said "Did you know that your daughter speaks English, French, and German, and knows 2 sentences in Italian?" I'm like "no!" The best was going home for Christmas, all the expat Montrealers reuniting (not that we knew each other, but we had so much in common!).

I'll get a few 'lousy answer' votes for this, but...

THANK YOU for asking this, because you reminded me of a poem I wrote for/to/about the woman sitting next to me on one of the first flights I ever took, probably one of the two flights I took between Army Basic Training and M.P. School.

If I could remember it all, I'd post it here, but I can't. If I find it before the question closes, I'll post it for you. It is rather sophomoric, but not bad for an amateur.

The last line of it started, "I hope I begin to talk to you..."

Frankly, I don't remember if I DID talk to her, or not.

Nowadays, I do talk to people in that situation, and in many others where one might find it odd, like in line at the supermarket. I was a lot more uptight when I was younger.

Sometimes I talk to them sometimes not..
Once I had to ask a lady to go wash off her perfume as I
could not breathe..I was afraid she would be upset but as I had
trouble breathing I asked anyway. She went to the bathroom and
very efficiently washed off the perfume..
That was so nice of her..

If it's someone around my age, either sex, I might talk to them. Depends on how they look and how they act. Some people obviously don't want to be disturbed, so I leave them alone. But I always have a good book with me in any case.

Talk to them? Once we were served our meals then told we didn't have utensils. The four of us on our row were strangers, but quickly came up with ideas to use as silverware. I thought we were in the "Survivor" class on that plane! If the person can carry on a fair conversation then I try to keep up my end of it. Best of luck to you!

I always try, it helps pass the time. No one that I remember has ignored me but you get a feel for someone who wants to be left alone.

I smile and say hello if we make eye contact. Maybe ask them how they are today. If they keep talking I talk to them and continue the conversation. If they are non responsive I let them alone.

I kind of try to keep to myself and zone out to music, read but I'm not rude, I will chat if the situation calls for it.

If they are sleeping, I don't wake them up, but if they seem interested, I'll talk to them. You're bound to meet someone interesting.
