Hello...I'm 30 years old and I have a BS in Computer Information Systems from Devry University - Columbus (2002). I have been trying to find a good paying IT job since graduation but I have not had any luck. I dont have a lot of experience in the IT field and its very hard for me to land a good paying position. Currently I am employed with a big company but I am not doing something with my degree and also I am not doing something in the IT field. Any advice? It seems companies now days are not interested in hiring people w/o experience. Any advice? I have been out of school since 2002 and I guess you can say I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place.

It doesn't sound like a fun option, but you may have to take a helpdesk tech support job for a while to get experience. The pay may not be good, but if you do well while doing the tech support, someone may notice and you may be able to get a better position in the company quicker than trying to convince someone to let you have the better job without the experience. Almost all of the IT people I work with today did some time as helpdesk tech support.

It may help to try to get in with a smaller company, since more of their staff will need to be multi-talented, and you could get more responsibility if you show you can do more than just helpdesk tech support.

Also in your spare time, try to work on IT related personal projects. This will help keep you sharp, and can help during interviews if you have actually done some of these projects. For example, if you want to become a system administrator, setup a personal server than can be accessed online and maintain it. It may help to show employers that you can run and maintain a server.

If you want to, try being a call agent. Though your BSIT degree may not mean much yet, you can earn some experience and prepare yourself for othe IT-related jobs.

Next, you could apply for a position in Databasing. Work your way up to DBA, then you'll have a rather satisfying salary to enjoy.

Otherwise, try applying at large companies with a need for an IT department. Of course, you'd usually start from the bottom rung, but don't we all?

You could also look for a position in a school, as a teacher assistant, getting experience over time, possibilities of replacing a teacher full time, possibilties of keeping yourself up-to-date. It can be a good resume builder. Also always mantain contact with contract agencies. They keep people who don't fail on them and always call back when there is something available. A lot of times is not exactly what you want, but if you can do it, it's an opportunity to get closer to what you want and meet people, which is the most important thing on any business.

Start simple with a contract company, it is a great foot in the door. The pay will be less than appealing, about 35k per year. However, this could go up quickly after being hired full time by the company.

Start from small things. Try being a call agent, while slowly rising up to better positions.
