I only visit home on holidays and longer vacations. When I get there, it is almost my dog and I have never seperated and we go on about our lives as normal. However, the day before I go back to school, I find that I have to tell her that I am leaving and spend extra time with her. When I leave, there will be a period of the dog having depression. I feel so bad about it.

The dog is not really mine, it is my brothers. When I am home, I am expected to care for her. She stays with my mother most times and my mom takes care of the dogs basic needs.

i know exactly what you mean. whenever i leave my dog for even 5 minutes she freaks out. if im gone for more than a day she just mopes or sleeps. it might sound dumb but while im away i call home and have my boyfriend put the phone up to my dogs ear. i talk to her for a few minutes and my man says she gets so happy to hear my voice. it makes it a little easier on both of us.

Dogs are so faithful, loyal and loving and it is very hard for them not to be with the person they love. Is she with your parents and do they take good care of her and give her the attention she needs?

My friend's son left his dog with his mother when he went away to school. The dog was chained up outside, got no exercise, could never be with people and was eventually "gotten rid of" because he turned rather vicious, snarling and biting at people.

The dog's most basic need is his human and you deprive him of the most important thing in his life by leaving him. I am not laying a guilt trip on you and it would be better that the dog go to a home where she can be a member of a family. Since you both love one another it might be best if you considered that as an option.

The way to not have a depressed dog is to give her to a rescue group. It was not responsible of you to get a dog before leaving for college, now your dog bears the brunt of your selfishness. Give her the chance to be happy with another family that is willing to take care of her and not leave her behind.

I took my dog with me to college. Look into this. You may be able to find a close off campus apartment that allows pets.

See if your folks can give her exactly the same routine that you do when you're home. She may miss the activities even more than she misses you.
