These guys aren't expecting a tip, so you shouldn't feel obligated. Private postal carriers generally charge more money than the US Postal Service and those guys are paid to do their job on an hourly basis.
The only exceptions might be if you live in an impossible location or place that someone really has to go out of their way to get to (like 4 floors up and no elevator, a long walk from the street to the front door) or if there was a particularly cumbersome, large, heavy package that wasn't easy to get to your door.
Even then, they aren't expecting it and its not a requirement, and some may not even accept it....oh, and last reason you might wanna tip him...if he's really cute and its a conversation starter!

NO, it is inappropriate.....
if you do get a lot of packages delivered and the same driver always brings them, you could possibly give him a small gift at the holidays...but even that is kinda stretching it

My UPS man is long gone before I even get to the door. He must stand at the curb and heave the package at the porch.
