if my birth certificate has a different last name (due to marriage) will that pose as a problem for crossing the border to canada or mexico if i have my driver's license too?

No.
I use mine all the time.
However ... do consider getting a passport, makes things easier all the way around.

No your birth certificate is always the name that you were born with. Your passport must have the same name as the name you have on your airline ticket. Your passport is all you need to show if you don't have one you will need both your birth certificate and one piece of picture ID they will know that the name will be changed.

nope - never has been a problem for me. But remember that the border laws are changing in January so it would be wise to apply for a passport before the rush.

It would be best to get a passport. Maybe you could take a certified copy of your marriage certificate if you can't get a passport in time.
