I just recently purchased a home, there are alot of imperfections on the walls. I was told by one of the roofers I should consider texturizing to cover them up.

Does anybody have any helpfull hint on how to do this or know of any sites that give step-by-step instructions?

I textured the walls of my kitchen/ breakfast room by using dry wall mud. I put a thin coat on a small area with a trowel then used another trowel with a rubber head touched it to the wet mud and pulled away from the wall. That made a nice textured surface. If took a little while for me to learn when the mud was the right consistency to achieve the look I wanted. After the mud dried, I painted with a light taupe paint, then rag rolled with a darker taupe, mixed with a glaze. I didn't use the same technique for the back splash, because I was worried about cleaning. There I painted tiles. For a little added interest I painted in a few "bricks" as if they had been exposed by deteriorating plaster. It turned out great and now I have what I call my Italian kitchen.

YOu can go to lowes or home depot and they'll give you step by stepdirections and rent you a sprayer if you wish or you can do it by hand,
Basically you take sheet rock mud, mix it with paint of your color or use color to get the color you want.
First make sure the wall of ceiling is clean and lightly sanded to get burs or trash off. mix the sheet rook mud and paint to a real thick mixture and use what eve rdesiogns you wish, just dip the design maker into the mud/pain mixture and put it against the ceiling. or wall. Once I saw my brother do this with a small stiff sweep(plastic broom) broom. He dipped it into the mud/paion mixture and sweepit onto the ceiling making a swrilling motion and ended up with swrillson the ceiling. Any building supply can giv eyou the information and show you the different designs to use to acheive the one you want. as well as colors.
There is also what is called hard coating. this is sprayed on and leaves the walls and or the ceiling wiht a very hard easy to clean coat which last s for years. you pracutally need a hammer to break or damage it. It also can be painted over to change the color.
Yuo can buy texture especially made for texturing walls and ceiling but i have seem much off it made form sheet rockmud.

Still for a child proof or close wall and easy to clean a hard coat is your best bet. This also hides imperfections.

I wouldn't do a textured wall because if you do not like it when you get done you will have to fix it. I would fix the wall by using Drywall mud or spackle and you fill in all the spots and let it dry and sand it and then paint it to your liking. If you still want to textured it you still can use the same stuff put a even coat on the how wall about 1/4 inch all over the wall and get a paint roller and roll up and down and move it all around and it will give you what you want
