As a Marcus myself, I have always gone with the shortened version Marc. After discussing it with a friend, he said that every Marcus besides myself shortens it to Mark. Just wondering what other people thought on this topic.

Your friend is wrong. Both Marc Anthonys (the current singer married to Jennifer Lopez and the classical contemporary of Caesar and Cleopatra) are spelled with the letter C. The C abbreviation has clearly withstood the test of time, as it is still in use over 2000 years later. You can spell a nickname any way you want, but a C is more common for Marcus. Mark with a K is a name on its own, not a nickname for anything.

The "standard" nickname for Marcus is Marc. However, a person could spell it anyway they want. I knew a Marcus who spelled the nickname Marq.

the spelling of any person's name is up to them, offically it should be marc, however just like with any name the person has the right to creativity. So whether your name is Marc/mark or Jenny/jeni/jennie molly/mollie brian/brien sean/shaun/shawn jorge/george John/jon seana/seona/shauna it's up to the person or their parents as to how it is spelled.
