When I first started getting panic attacks I hyperventilated a lot. My counselor said the only thing that could happen is that I would pass out and start breathing again. That was BAD information. I should have been given medication to prevent attacks.
Your doctor sounds like a quack, go see someone else.
It may take time to find the right medication for you, but you have to keep trying. When you find the right one, you will feel SO much BETTER.
Here is a link for you, I've copied some here for you. Good luck.

Stress is a strange thing but it can ruin your mental health and your physical health too. Without resorting to meds there are some other things you can do: Mediation at least two times a day Perfect nutrition, ask a dietician or get help online (when your nutrition is out of balance an attack can come on easily) Lots of Exercise (aerobic) biking, running, long walks (it is amazing cure as it floods the mind with good hormones and tires your system out so you wont get attacks, it works). Hypnosis is the best cure (licensed please) it can take those images from your subconcsious to the conscious and delete them just like a computer deletes info. Relaxation Exercises (get a book) Support Groups for Panic Disorders (there are many out there and they can help alot) you will meet others with the same condition. Acupuncture (great help to unlock the parts of the body that are controlling he attacks, it really does help) Open and cleanse your Chakras (not sure what this is look online) it is amazing and it works too. Either you can do it yourself or a healer can help you. It is worth it, Believe me when I say any of these can help. I study many issues and all of the above help with this type of stress. Get a handle on it now or it can control your life. Good Luck

Hi. I have had severe anxiety disorder for 19 years now. I want to reassure you that it is not likely at all that you will actually pass out! I NEVER have, although I frequently feel like I might. I commute 60 miles each way to and from work every day. I have on occasion pulled over to "get my head straight" but I always make it just fine. That feeling is very common for people with panic and anxiety. Trust your doctor, he is right.
Are you taking any medicines for this? If not I strongly recommend that you ask your doctor if you can try some. It may take a while to find one thats right for you, but I promise you will be glad you did.
If you ever want to chat with someone who knows what you are going through you can email me through here and I will give you my real email address and
messenger screen name. I find it very helpful and reassuring to hear other people's stories and experiences with this disorder. At lleast it reminds me tthat I am not alone.
Best of luck to you. Hang in there.
Always remember this: You have to control your anxiety, dont let it control you! Yes, I know that is easier said than done, but it is possible.

absolutely you can pass out from a panic attack. You need a new doctor! He probably believes that his assurances will keep you from freaking out or something. I used to have panic attacks when driving on freeways and I would get lightheaded and my feet would shake like crazy, nearly making it impossible to depress the brake or gas pedals. NOT SAFE!!! I did not take medication, I just stopped having panic attacks. However, a beta blocker would be very useful to you, even in a very small dose. You should find a new doctor and discuss some medication options.
My sister and my mom both have very bad panic disorders and both will tell you that passing out or blacking out are not common, but hardly rare or impossible.

During a panic attack you won't actually lose consciousness, but you can feel frozen, or feel like you're leaving your body and just watching the scene unfold. That can be scary if you're driving. I understand that fear, but the likelihood of losing consciousness while driving is quite slim. This is an issue you need to work on in therapy. You can learn some calming techniques and coping skills to reduce your anxiety about driving. Hang in there!

I have a very close friend who gets panic attacks at night a middle aged guy who is strong and brilliant but he gets panic attacks when he sleeps and he wakes up on the floor many times.
I would think that if it has happened to him it may happen to you.
I would stop and rest until the panic attack has subsided
