Lascaux may be the most beautiful Paleolithic painted cave in the world. It contains more than 1500 pictures of animals, all of them are 17,000 years old.
In ancient caves in the south of France, near Lascaux, boys in 1940 discovered 17,000 year old paintings and artifacts made by our early ancestors. The cave was evidently a sanctuary for the performance of sacred rites and ceremonies.

Please see link attached for pictures of the paintings.

The paintings at Lascaux, belong to the Aurignacian period. They are considered some of the oldest art works in the world, dating from around 15,000- 10,000 BC.They are believed to be ritual paintings associated with hunting and were renewed each season to promote good catches of the beasts depicted. Similar paintings exist at Altamira in Spain and in Africa. They are the product of a hunter culture with strong shamanistic overtones..
