I started itching just thinking about lice!!! The answer is lice cannot jump. I worked in an urgent care and heard the Dr tell patient after patient that this is an urban myth. they may scurry very fast and are totally discusting but they don't ever, ever jump.
I know you didn't ask but I will give you the best (and cheapest) method of getting rid of these pesky buggers: slather the patients hair liberally with patroleum jelly, put on a shower cap, and wear the cap and jelly for a few hours or over night. remove cap and use Dawn dish detergent-it is the only one we found that works by cutting the grease--to wash out the junk. When it is all out nit pick to your heart's content. Some lice are becoming immune to Rid and Nix so this works best. clean the house thouroughly and wash all sheets in hot water, put all items that cannot be washed in a garbage bag for 2 weeks until all the bugs die. Good Luck and if this is tmi sorry.

A nurse would know, they don't really jump like fleas, but they can go from one person to another if your heads get close together, this means that if your frind has lice and you lean in to whisper something to her you could get it, or if you are in a crowded hallway and somone near you has lice you could get it from them.

They surely do travel, but not by air, they do not jump. My ex stepdaughter had lice continuously, her dumb *** mother never treated her house or her head. So I had lots of experience with them, ewww gross. Anyway, they crawl lightening fast and just infest EVERYTHING. They get into the fibers of fabric in cars and carpet and clothing and bedding, its just crazy. They may seem as though they can jump because they move so fast and can cling to any surface, but it simply isn't true. but, close proximity for a moment or two is all that is needed to pass them from one person to another.

Fleas jump, lice don't. There are preparations to get rid of them - some better some worse. One sure way to wipe them out is to get shaved bald. Yep, happened to me when I was little.
