haj .. have done the free stuff for many years. it gets stressful in raising a family without a phd, staff (or paid) posts, even with a church severely in the black seem hard to come by, although i myself have never applied for one.

Ahhhhh. Ministry at it's finest. This is why so many turn away from the church.

Well, there are some more cultured ministries where instead of having you duke it out in the parking lot, they have all the applicants duke it out in a wrestling ring in the ministry basement. (Normally they do a 20 man Battle Royal, but periodically they may do a King Of The Ring tournament instead, if there's sufficient time.)

I am a Pastor and I have never heard of any applicants having to "duke it out in the parking lot"

Find a need, and fill it. Don't try to get the most coveted positions.
If there is no ministry to the poor, go into that. If there is no ministry to the homeless, get involved with them.
If there is no one tending to the problems of living with hearing impairment or loss, or speech impairment, volunteer for that.
Pray for Christ to guide you, and you shall find a path. Fighting for personal gain is antithetical to Christ's teachings.
