Presumably you are intending to visit New Zealand for tourism only. If so, you do NOT require a visa provided you intend to stay for three months or less. Additionally, your passport must have an expiry date greater than three months after your intended departure from New Zealand and you must be holding an airline ticket for your return to your home country or for onward travel to another country. You should also be able to show that you can support yourself without working while you are in New Zealand.
If this is not the case, you will need a visa. You can apply at your nearest New Zealand embassy, consulate or high commission. The website below will give you all the information you need with regards to the type of visas available. Your chances of obtaining a visa within three weeks are remote.

Sidwell of course would not have a clue. confident, he will choose a visa. confident, he can shop on with in NZ for it. it is going to likely be processed on the Consulate in Auckland, not Wellington. Wellie Embassy would not furnish consular amenities.

Are you kidding? You need a passport for pretty much everywhere. I lost mine in Germany and had a lot of issues trying to get back to the US. I am sure every country has a strict policy, that is why passports are invented, anyways. You need at least 6 months to get a passport in the US- It is faster in some other countries, and you need to get it in your home country.
Look at this website it explains it. I do not think they are going to let you off the plane in New Zealand. I am serious about this.
