What is a religion? If it is a belief system which includes one or more deities, then Buddhism isn't strictly a religion. Buddha is revered as a God in some branches of Buddhism, but as a teacher in others. The latter are philosophies not religions.

Guatama Buddha was raised in India. He left his home and family in search of enlightenment, which he is said to have found while meditating under a Bo tree.
Buddhists look to him as their source of enlightenment. There are different forms of buddhism (zen is problably the most influential, which has its origins in Tau-sheng, who migrated from China to Japan) which encompass many beliefs and even different worldviews. Buddhism started more as a reaction against hinduism and is best classified as pantheism.
Pantheism is self-refuting and no one who claims to be one can consistently live their life as a pantheist.
