I don't believe that gays "chose" to be gay. I believe that some people are just born that way. But your other three questions stereotype homosexuality. I think there would be homosexuality regardless of the emphasis our culture puts on masculinity and feminity. Same for gender roles. There are a lot of heterosexual males that are the stay at home parents - a job perceived to be only occupied by the wife. Or the idea that only boys will play with G.I. Joes and girls play with their barbie dolls. And boys doing the mocking - boys will be boys. So for gays to say that they chose to be gay - it's not something they just woke up one day and said "hey, I think I'll be gay today and for the rest of my life." It's something that happens over time and that one time they declared to the people around them is when they felt comfortable stating it, not some random decision. It's not a choice, it's a lifestyle.

First thing is people don't choose to be straight or gay; it just sort of happens.
Second thing, being effeminite is not a gay thing; lots of straight guys have feminine characteristics as well. It is just that some gay guys tend to flaunt it a little more than a straight guy would thus making it appear as if gay guys are effeminite. But from my experience (which is a bit on the extensive side) there are a whole lot of very masculine gay guys out there too..
Third thing, Gender roles are borne out of a sense of what it means to be masculine or feminine. Women do cook and wash dishes while men hunt and fish. Reality is those are stereotypes imposed by society in a current environment and will change over time. Just look back to merry olde england and see what men were wearing and how they did their hair in days gone by. Whiel you could say someone is gay or straight based on the gender role they appear to play, it would not be accurate. Lots of very straight men cook and wash dishes whiel lots of gay men actually like to hunt and fish.
Fourth thing, mocking anyone is a form of buyllying whereby the so called stronger guys taunt what they peceive to be weaker guys. again ther eis no basis in deciding a bully is straight or the one being bullied is gay. Fact is more often that not the bully is using his bullying to hide his own true self. So, don;t be surprised if the bully turns out to be a gay guy while the person being picked on is all set to marry a nice girl, have kids and go hunting with her.

Gays chose to be gay? That's news to many gay people, just like straight people chose to be straight must be news to them...
People don't choose to be one or the other. (or even in-between)
Even if "masculinity" and "femininity" didn't exist (which they don't by the way, it's actually stereotypes, but we need not go into that now) homosexuality would exist, just like if bread were never invented, food would still exist.
Gender roles do not have a definite direct correlation to homosexuality, although some people who are homosexual DO have gender identity issues, not all homosexuals do.
If there were not precieved notion of masculinity and femininity, boys would not mock effeminiate boys for being effeminiate, they would mock them for other differences.

There has always been and always will be Homosexuality.
None of those factors have any bearing on whether people are gay or not.
We are BORN gay or straight, etc. New medical evidence is being found to support the fact that people are indeed born gay and straight.
Nobody would willingly "choose" to be part of a discrimnated against minority.

Gays choose to be gay because of all the special treatment they receive, not everybody gets to choose between living a lie and total isolation and alienation from closed minded family and friends, not everyone gets beat up, or dragged behind a truck just for being themselves.

I don't think anyone makes a choice to be gay or straight, I don't think emphasis on masculinity and femininity make a difference.

Gay people don't choose to be gay. What person in their right or wrong mind would choose to live a life of ridicule and possible physical harm?
However there are gay oriented people that choose not to act on it and choose to live a active straight life.

There have always been gays. Back in ancient Greece it was openly practiced and nobody cared. There's nothing unique about this point in history when it comes to people being gay. I don't think they choose it though. Considering the way gay people get treated you would have to be crazy to actually choose it.

No one choses to be gay. Most people are born that way and some just figure our their sexuality later on in life when they realize that they are attracted to the same sex.

Why do you think gays choose to be gay? Let's see, i think I will choose to be something that will get me ridiculed, shunned by my family and friends, teased, excluded from my partners health and life benefits, etc. Gays are born that way, I don't think anyone wants to choose a path that makes their life so hard.
