To clarify Randy D is correct about the origins of "Cop". Badges use to be made of copper and the public would refer to the police officers as "coppers". That's why you hear the term in older gangster movies.
And to ditto some others here, police do more then fight crime. It would be incorrect to call them such. They also assist in other calls for service like accidents and assisting citizens with non-criminal activities.

The cops in my family tell me that the nickname goes back to England and stands for "Constable On Patrol" They may be pulling my leg. They also say that most departments shy away from the "fighter" name because they are constantly being accused of brutalizing a suspect who tries to fight their arrest.
Our police departments are actually Peace Officers, and their duty is to assure their area of patrol is safe and peaceful. They usually refer to those area's of high crime rate as War Zones, just as the military does. Our liberal watchdogs don't want police to fight crime or be pro-active. That might violate some scumbag's civil rights. They must be re-active and only show up after the crime is comitted.
Fortunatly, FIRE does not have liberal lawyers to prevent our FireFighters from attacking it. In their spare time they also go out and make people fix fire hazards, such as bad wiring or greasy smoke vents. But when dad was in the business, we called them Firemen, not fighter.

well firefighters do more than fight fires...they get kittys out of trees and they get people out of cars when they have wrecks etc...police officers police the actions of people that aren't always illegal or criminal. Police inforce the laws that are on the books MOST of the time between people or organizations that are perfectly legal and legit. Fighting crime is only part of their job....If you took everyone at what they do in part then a pastor would be a preacher and you wouldn't include him counciling his church people or the visiting that he does to the elderly, if you were talking about a quarterback what about when he runs the ball not just passes it.....point being you can't just take a person for what his job title is because if you are doing your job well you are doing SOOO much more than just what your title states.

I only rarely hear police called "crime fighters" as such, even thought that might be an accurate appellation. The word "cop" comes from the word "copper" which is what their badges were made of years ago, and I can't remember exactly where the name began, whether in some place like new york or boston or somewhere in England, but, that's how it was derived. God Bless you.

COP is short for Chief of Police, and on most police emblems it say somewhere that they "protect and serve" Crime fighting is everyone's responsibility. The police do fight crime, but so do the sheriffs, and the state troopers, the FBI,,,,, etc I guess the real crime fighter is McGruff the Crime fighting Dog.

You have to enter into the police academy. Contact your local police department and ask them which academy do they recommend. Some police departments are short handed and will pay for your academy training if you agree to join their force upon completion. After you become a police officer, you will be eligible to apply to the FBI or SWAT. Stay out of trouble because felons need not apply.
