what other things can you use besides butter? and what are the effects that they will have?

Not knowing what you are cooking, butter may be substituted with margarine or shortening for items such as cakes or cookies with little impact on the recipe. Butter has the better flavor of the three. Apple sauce may also be used in products like cakes however you must adjust your liquids or add a little more flour to get the consistency desired. Further-more one must also remember that apple sauce is a "grainy" or textured product so this might have a slight impact on your finished product. If you are looking to substitute butter for frying, then margarine, shortening, olive oil or other such oils may be used. I prefer to use olive oil. Hope this helps.

Depends what you plan to cook. Here are two examples:
If you're making:
- Bananna Nut Cake or Chocolate Brownies - then substitute applesauce for the same amount of butter or oil required.
This makes it more nutritious, moist and lower in calories.

Applesauce can be used in place of butter or shorting. you can reduce the other liquids a bit because of the moisture in the applesauce. Use an applesauce without added SUGAR

olive oil is better for u but it will add a distinct flavor (especially extra virgin)

PLEASE dont use margerin it SUCKS
(plus its only one molecule away from plastic)
