Sound like you did sweety... sorry to hear that... you will have to wait and see if he and emily are going to last.
He probably denied asking you because he didn't want to deal with the rejection.
Next time.. if you like the guy, say, "let me think about this for a few days"... don't say 'No' if you are interested, because that is crushing to a guys self esteem, he may have waited quite a while to work up the nerve to ask. Give the poor guy the same respect in the answering.
As far as your friend goes, if she's a true friend, then explain the situation to her, she may understand and be able to explain it to him, that is, if she's not too hooked on him yet. And for that matter, make SURE you really WANT this guy before you make any descisions to change the current situation.. k?

Don't worry. If you wasn't ready to date then you wasn't ready to date. You don't need to rush into the messy world of dating.
Let him and Emily go out with each other and see what happens.
It may not work out and you may get another chance and this time you will be better prepared.
I'm sure you will soon meet other guys you like too.

wow.. i can see how you need help. i would confront both him and emily. tell him that you might have second thoughts on going out with him.. cause it looks to me like you like him again. tell emily that you might be interested in him.. and that he actually asked you out. good luck :] i hope my advice helps!

why don't you mind your own business -- if he and emily want to date, leave them alone. he wants to date and you don't. he now is and you aren't, so what's the problem?
