I don't think there are any books that can really prepare you for moving to NYC.
As far as finding an apartment, definitely check out Cragislist:
http://newyork.craigslist.org/
(Also good for finding jobs, furnishings, etc..)
I think a great book for learning about the city is: The Works: Anatomy of a City by Kate Ascher. It won't help you find an apartment, but it is a really great book about how this city works.
You also might want to check out curbed.com - there are lots of resources there regarding apartments and landlords.

Well, i will say it was rather obvious you read twilight by your style of typing. i do know books that are better than twilight so hopefully you will take my suggestions into account. Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. it is really good. i absolutely love that series. The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, first book City of Bones. i really enjoyed the series. There are three books so far and it is almost as good as Harry Potter, which is a real honor. It has werewolves, vampires, fairies, warlocks, demons, demon killers, and a whole bunch of other stuff. it is a brilliant series. Eragon by Christopher Paolini. I thoroughly enjoyed it also. There are three books in the series so far; Eragon, Eldest and Brisingr. Inkheart by Cornelia Funke. It was a good fantasy series. The three books are Inkheart, Inkspell, and Inkdeath. Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan. The books are rather short but i enjoyed them. There are 7 books in the series. The book description is:When fifteen-year-old Will is rejected by battleschool, he becomes the reluctant apprentice to the mysterious Ranger Halt, and winds up protecting the kingdom from danger. The first book is the Ruins of Gorlan. That's about all i can think for the moment. All the books listed are better than Twilight but then again, so is about every book ever written.

NYC Rent Guidelines Board
This website helps you know the tenants rights in NYC. It also explains the rent stabilization laws (very important) and you can see if you are being overcharged if you live in a rent stabilized building. There is also a link to a list of all rent stabilized buildings in NYC. It's always a good website to bookmark if you live in NYC.
