Celiac Disease affects one person in every 100, yet doctors are so unaware of it that only one person in 3500 in the general population is diagnosed with Celiac Disease in the U.S. (that means only 3% of the people suffering with the disease ever get the proper diagnosis, and therefore, proper treatment).

Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disease that damages the lining of the small intestine. It is caused by an allergic reaction to gluten/gliadin proteins in wheat, rye and barley.

The only treatment is nutritional - avoidance of the foods that contain the proteins. Medical doctors may miss this common condition (often misdiagnosed as IBS) because it is a nutritional problem and there is no drug treatment. It is well documented that medical doctors have almost no training in nutrition and receive most of their continuing education knowledge from the drug companies.

Depends on what you mean "well known in the world." There are many diseases and medical issues related to seemingly simple issues like clean drinking water. Issues like those are much more important and practical than any other answer you might be looking for.

Or are you looking for an obscure disease that 1 out of 100,000 people will get and you want to bring attention to?

funding for research! we spend billions on cancer research. If researchers cure cancer thousands of people are out of jobs because it will be hard to get the public behind a new disease to spend billions on. It is in the best interest of these scientists not to find a cure because doing so would put them and their collegues in the unemployment line.
