If you can't qualify for a Secret security clearance, you can't be a recruiter. Because all recruiters handle confidential information, they must pass a background check.

In addition, they must all be senior NCOs (either very senior Corporal or Sergeant), and in their 2nd (or later) Enlistment. They only want Career military to be recruiters, not "first timers" who want an easy job.

Normally, in order to get assigned to "Special Duty" (recruiting, recruit training, advanced training) you have to be one of the best in the military. Only about 10% of Marines that request Recruiting Duty actually get it. And 15-20% of those fail to make it through the background checks and schools.

It is really less a question of "what disqualifies" a person, as much as "what makes a person good enough for recruiting duty". As the militaries main tool for gaining new members, they only want the best they can get in those positions.
