I baked some cookies tonight, followed the directions but when I pulled them from the oven they were really flat. Does anyone know what may have happened?

1. Your rising agent (baking soda or baking powder -w hatever the recipe called for) may have been flat. Check the expiration dates.

or

2. You may have used too much butter or shortening (are they greasy on the bottoms?)

or

3. You may have overbeat the dough - cookies usually come out best when mixed by hand.

Better luck next time!

Not knowing the ingredients used, it's hard to say. My first thought was old baking soda or powder. I understand that overbeating can also cause flattening out. Personally, I usually prefer cookies that are thin and crisp. I made some that way by accident a few years back--they were delicious, but I haven't been able to duplicate them since!

Most cookies call for baking soda or baking powder...if you used one of these, and the ingredient was out of date, that could be your problem. Check the expiration date on the box/can. That could be the problem.

the butter or shortening became to soft. Next time make the cookie doe as before, once done, put back in frig for a couple of hours, then spoon out and bake , they will be thick and delicicous..

Leavening agents are what make cookies and cakes rise. Sour milk, buttermilk need soda. Baking powder and eggs also make things rise. You may have used the buttermilk or sour milk and not used soda or used baking powder with them.

It was probably the ingredients you put in. If you put too much or too little of something, it won't come out right. Like my teacher says "Recipies aren't always right. Use you sense of judgement of what is right and what is not."

Besides, cookies flatten when they bake.

Do you live at a high (above 3500 ft) elevation? If so, I'd try adding a tblsp or so of flour. If not, a lot of other things might have affected it. Try using cold butter and water, fresher eggs and a lower temp. oven.

If you use warm butter and put the cookie dough on a hot cookie sheet, they will spread. Chill the dough slightly and put on cooled cookie sheets.
