G'day. I don't know if I'll be any help here, but I'll try :) I'm suffering post-natal psychosis at the moment. I've just started seeing a psychologist, who gave me a test to do. People in the normal range for depression, stress and anxiety for this test are around the 25-26th percentile. I'm at 99.5%!
Anti-depressants do not work for me. They have a good initial effect, but it wears off quickly. I have turned to natural therapies, and haven't looked back.
Please understand that even though medication is sometimes necessary (I've been on four different types), they do not cure depression. They simply alter your brain chemistry. And there are plenty of side-effects, which you're obviously aware of.
Think of medication as a stepping stone to other, more permanent solutions. You'll no doubt have nutritional deficiencies that need fixing (and these have a HUGE) impact on your body, trust me!!!), you probably have an underlying anxiety disorder (many many depressed people do), you no doubt need some good therapy, including cognitive behavioural therapy (that's what I'm doing now, and it's great), etc etc.
I have an excellent naturopath and kinesiologist, and without them I'd be dead. No question.
Stress for a depressed person is inevitable. Stress for anyone is inevitable. It's a part of life. But the condition of your body, immune system, and your mind will dictate how well you can deal with stress.
Get lots of help from good doctors/practitioners, be your own best friend, find out as much as you can about what it'll take to get you better, and go do it!

I personally believe that you can heal yourself far better than drugs can in some cases. Try to eat foods as close to their natural state as possible, drink plenty of fresh, clean water. Rest well, exercise regularly in fresh air and some sunshine. Get a dog or a cat and look after it well. Get a balance of work and social activity into your life, join a club or learn a new hobby or skill. Try to keep a positive mental attitude as this is imperative to good health... keep safe, don't take stupid risks. Laugh often. Good luck.:)
