You know what a cask is (a kind of barrle, a large container for wine). Amontillado is a variety of Jerez/sherry wine.

In the Poe story, the narrator uses the lure of a cask of amontillado he newly received to draw a hated enemy into the lowest reaches of his palazzo's basements, where he proceeds to bury him alive as a way of revenge.

Edgar Allen Poe Novel....scarey and profound short story

"The Cask of Amontillado" (sometimes spelled "Casque of Amontillado") is a short story, written by Edgar Allan Poe and published in 1846. It is set in 19th century Italy and concerns the deadly revenge taken by the narrator on a friend whom he claims has insulted him. Like several of Poe's stories, and in keeping with the 19th century fascination with the subject, the narrative revolves around a person being buried alive. As in The Black Cat and The Tell-Tale Heart, Poe tells the story from the murderer's point of view.

The "meaning" is, or rather the moral is: Revenge is a dish best served cold. Make sure that the person you are getting revenge on knows why and who is getting the revenge.

I haven't read that in so long. I think that it tells us that our temptations will sometimes do us in, and it also tells us to be careful who we trust. Fortunato had an addiction and a love of wines, and Monstrado used his weakness against him. I think those were their names. I might have it backwards. I'd have to read it again to be positive. It's a great short story though.
