I have noticed that on days where I drink a ton more caffeine that I tend to become depressed without any reason for it. So I am just wondering if drinking caffeine can be a type of downer/depressant. Anyone know?

Caffeine is a stimulant to the central nervous system BUT coming off caffeine can indeed cause depression. Most drugs (and caffeine is a drug) will do the opposite of what we think they will do if we take too much. This is a built in protection to keep you from overdosing.

If you stop caffeine altogether and suddenly, you will likely notice headaches and sluggishness and, in extreme cases, thoughts of death or suicide. If you decide to slow down on the caffeine, do so slowly.

Caffeine is a stimulant in small doses, but in higher doses it has been shown to have the opposite affect. This is probably due to the body's system counteracting the stimulant affects of the caffeine and releasing chemicals to lower the level of stimulant.

Caffeine is a stimulant as the other person mentioned. Alcohol is a depressant (kinda of ironic).

Caffeine is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant, having the effect of temporarily warding off drowsiness and restoring alertness, the operative word being temporary...what comes up, must go down...
