You can always help with gifts, but the benefits just don't last as long as creating a great experience. You could invite them to dinner or some other shared holiday experience that they will remember. It's always great to create experiences that people will remember.

I work at a church, and believe me, if you personally make a visit to a few churches and talk to the ministers, they will be willing to pool together and help this family. Perhaps the girls won't get everything they want - - - like expensive items - - - but hey, a lot of kids from wealthier families don't get everything they want either. Get to know this family and see for yourself what their needs are for Christmas. Believe it or not, there are many single mothers who play the system and if you don't know them personally, they may just be sitting at home calling around telling a sob story just to get whatever they can. Gift certificates to Wal-mart can be cashed in for cartons of cigarettes and cases of beer. So be careful about what type of people you are helping.

Adopt them. Bring them into your family circle and keep them there. If you care that much you will be rewarded in ways you can't imagine.
No one is saying that you have to spend a lot of money on them. If they are as needy as you portray they will enjoy just being a part of the traditions of the holiday. A fiving spirit is the warmest feeling you'll ever have, an it will teach your children humility.

register at www.freecycle.com and ask the same question, maybe add some things the family would like for Christmas. This site is geared toward your local vicinity and some people give away stuff that is in good condition AND for free.

Put their names in at the local family gift drive and when it comes time for them to pass out gifts to the children who come from families who don't have much, they will send over gifts to them. If your town, city doesn't do this...
Check with your local church to see what they can do...
If you have some of your own extra money-go to stores that are having sales and buy them things. Wrap them up and put them in a bag. Leave them on their door step, ring the door bell and graciously hide so they don't see who they are from! They would love that!!! And it would make you feel better knowing you did something nice for them.

Maybe raise money at your school, church or work. Or if you are more bonded with the family, buy gifts for the girls then sneak them into the house and leave them as "from santa" on chistmas.
