Good question , Pam.
Don't bother too much about atheists who make fun of Christianity. Our faith can stand the test of time , logic and religious bashing by those who don't believe.
It has survived for almost 2000 years. Christian matyrs, beginning with the Apostles have been tortured, thrown to lions, boiled or lynched to death long before you and I were born.
You should not try to shut them up because if you do, they will shout louder.
We are to be patient when people oppose the Christian faith. Give an answer to those who question about God, Jesus, Bible or Christian practices.
Don't forget, apostle Paul. He was once upon a time, Saul, the champion persecutor of the Christians in his days.
What happened when he met Jesus face to face ? The bulk of the New Testament was written by Paul.
There might be some 'Pauls' in our midst who poke fun of our faith now, but one day when God touches their hearts ........

Why is it that you assume that everyone's an evangelist out to sell you some religion? Why are you capitalizing "the Atheists"? Is there some sort of Evil Atheist Conspiracy that you're not telling the rest of the class about? (ALL MEMBERS OF THE EAC... SILENCE)
Why is it that most Christians have such a black-and-white dichotomy for everything? It's either "my way" or "the wrong way".
And if you've really read the answers on this site, you wouldn't have made the fallacy of saying that atheists "believe in nothing". That's stupid. If you believe in nothing, you're a nihilist. Atheism isn't a religion, it's a description. If atheism is a religion, then not collecting stamps is a hobby.

Im not an atheist yet Im not fully relegious either. I do think its ok to question things but many seem to get offened by doing so? I think faith can be co-exist with science and will accept proven facts but these seems to get twisted by religious fanatics. I think there are many things we dont really know and we all need to have an open mind. Nobody knows everything.

Sanity. Open mindedness. The realization that you do actually have a brain and don't need to follow some invisible guy in the sky. I'm actually not trying to convert anyone. I just enjoy seeing the same questions asked over and over and over and over.....like this one! And pardon me, but I do so believe in things. I just don't share your belief that some white guy with a beard created everything, that he's waiting in heaven to punish me, that every little thing I do, say, think, or feel is sinful, that I'm going to be judged and found unworthy, none of it. If your god is so great and kind and loving, what need is there for hell at all? If we're all his children, why don't we all get to go to heaven, regardless of faith? Why so many rules and laws? Why do I have to be dead to be eternally happy? Have you ever asked yourself these things? Or do you just blindly follow along with it? I'm really curious to know the answer to these things. Maybe that's why I come here.

Atheists have as much right to be here as you do, Pamela. I cannot say this enough - R&S is not a private club.
And if you are only seeing the anger of atheists towards Christians, then I think you have blinders on. Trust me - Christians give as good as they get.

the truth is that if you can't believe in God or even have an open mind about God then how can you have an open mind about anything? To me, not believing means that your eyes are closed to anything that brings true joy and happiness to your life. How can someone be truly happy with anything from this world without God in your life? Without God there is no purpose for any living thing. How can thinking that when we die we just stay dead and go nowhere make us happy? it simply can't. Your question is a very good one. What exactly are they trying to convert us to; a life filled with nothing but complete loneliness and sorrow? What is so great about that? God is love and his son is love. Without them there is no such thing as a complete fulfilled life. I'm happy to see that you realize all of this, I only wish that everyone would open their eyes to this.

I believe some Atheists who are still reacting against the abuse of Christian faith to unjustly judge, persecute, or otherwise impose upon others are trying to oppose "blind faith" and would rather defend standards of morals/ethics based on "reason" and "truth."
The common search for truth is the secular equivalent of seeking the Kingdom of God; it is part of the same drive by free will that God instilled in the human conscience toward good and away from evil. The problem is when people mistake each other as enemies, when the real enemy is the separation, distrust, and unforgiveness that prevent people from working together to establish truth as a common goal.
I blame the language barrier more than anything; there are secular equivalents for everything in the Bible, and I find if these are "translated" into common terms, anyone can discuss these as universal values and experiences, where humanity has come from, and where we are going.
Currently people seem to divide themselves as gentiles under natural laws and secular systems separately from churched people under sacred or divine laws. But as Jesus came to govern both folds as one flock, he fulflills both the natural laws and values of gentiles as the sacred and divine laws and teachings of the churched people. We just don't always speak the same language, so it is harder to understand other people coming from a different background.

I think you should look on it as a test of your faith and an obstacle course if you will with which to strengthen your faith. You will find that as you search your heart and the bible for the answers to their questions, you are actually building upon the foundation of faith you began with. They are actually very good tools for honing your beliefs and making you learn more by making you think and research.

I don't try to convert other people to anything. Odds are those that do try are trying to get you to agree with them- just like all the Christians who try to convert me.

Hopelessness?
My dear, that self-righteous attitude that your life is better than ours is what religion does to people, and THAT is what we are trying to wake you up to.
We are trying to further rational thinking and make this world, which is falling down around us in the hands of religion, a better place for you and me and everyone.
That's what we are doing here.

That bugs me too. They have the choice to believe or not, but they aren't helping when others are asking about Christianity or discussing religions and they say things like, "There's no proof to that" all the time. I know this isn't everyone, but it's still annoying.
I suppose they're trying to get us to stop believing and trust only in science, etc. I could never live my life without the reassurance of prayer at the end of the day when everything's going wrong.
