i have made 12000 so far and a thousand has been taken out for federal and 400 for state and i claim zero

If you make $14,000 total for the year, and are single with no dependents and take the standard deduction, your total federal tax for the year would be under $600. If your total taken out for the year for federal is $1100, you'd get back around $500.

As far as state, since state income tax rates vary a lot, can't tell without knowing where you live.
