The fifth commandment: honor your father and your mother.

It is sometimes best to spend time with your wife for some time before thinking about living close to one's parents. Leave enough time that you are mature enough to ignore attempts at manipulation, bribery, guilt trips, etc.

You should be independently wealthy, so undue influence cannot be imposed on you! Be prepared, sometimes the result is a lack of appreciation! So do it for altruistic reasons, not for other rewards.

It can be a very difficult thing to do, depending on the personalities involved, and is never easy.

In biblical times, there were large families which could better share the burden of looking after relatives. I do know some people who have "mother in law suites" in their homes. Sometimes it is ok, other times, not so happy.

My recommendation is that you get some counselling from someone who knows your situation and has extensive experience in these types of situations. Honestly discuss it so you can make an informed decision.

Deuteronomy 14 is where a welfare system was proposed for the Hebrews.

I think the Bible in general supports that children honor and care for their elders. I have below a link to a page with many quotes which may help.

first off in the ten commandments it says: honor your father and mother.

Also in Colossians 3:12-14 it says this:

12Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

We could definately apply this to family. Love your parents and if you did truly love them, like this quote says to, then you would take care of them.

The Bible says that we must respect our parents and Jesus condemed those that were not supporting their parents as much as they could have. The Bible also mentioned the wisdom that the aged have. Hope that helps

Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the Lord.
Leviticus 19:31-33

In the new testament, Jesus provided a wonderful example on this when he, about to die on the cross, made provisions for the care of his mother:

John 19:
25Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son," 27and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
