You know how it feels when you stand on your tip toes, well stand on a stair that way and go up and down lowering yourself down as far as you can then up as far as you can several times feeling the burn. Increase reps over time.

*squats*, bicycling, running, hiking up steep hills (my favorite :) ), paddle boating? (i am not sure, never tried it, but it seems like it would work the calves), weight lifting using your legs versus your arms, etc

Put your hands on your hips, keep your back straight and do as many squats as you can. When you can't do anymore, give it a rest, then do more squats.

Take them out to the fields and make them run around.
