My mom had a blue heeler that did the same thing. I distracted her-at first telling her NO! because she would get all excited when I came in the door, running up to me, wagging her little stubby tail a million miles an hour. Then immediately I would give her a command-like sit. But, the first time she would run up-even if it sounds harsh, I would yell NO! and go right past her & wait until she was calm. Eventually, she began to be more calm when approaching me, and would immediately sit, because that was always the next command. It seemed to work. I also would sometimes hold my hand like there was something in it-as a distraction.

Actually you CAN train your dog out of this habit. It's a submissive gesture (called submissive urination) on the dogs part and you need to build your dogs confidence. When you approach him don't lean over him to pet him and pet him under the chin on the chest. This is a reassuring gesture to a dog. If he starts to urinate immediately when you approach him as soon as he starts to urinate ignore him. Turn around and walk away. Most dogs will pick up right away what is going on although some may take more times than others. I had one bitc.h that I taught after doing it three times and another dog that has taken several days of practice. He still does sometimes but is getting better. Try these techniques and you should soon have success.

If this is causing a real problem then there are meds that your vet can prescribe which do help a lot. Unfortunately there is no real way to train your dog not to do this, so you either have to put up with it or medicate.

well u can train ur dog to go do its buisness in a specific area. once it has a ccomplished that, there should be no problems. ifit has trouble, just scold ur pet, lightly not overreacting.then your pet should get the hang of it.If this doesnt work there are meds so your pet can get out of this habit or just help him/her day by day.
hope i answer your question!!!=-)

My friend has dogs the pee a lot when they get excited. He limits their water intake. This helps but you have to be careful not to dehydrate the dog either. Your vet will have the best answer though I'm sure.
