Am I getting ripped off?I want to buy a new 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. This is an ad from a newspaper where the SUV is on "sale" BUT they want to charge me for a protection plan and VIN etch. A protection plan cost $695 and the VIN etch cost $299. What is this? I never paid for this stuff before when I purchased a car. I only paid for Tax, Title, and license and also the moving charge.

Please advise if you have experience in cars or buying cars.

Thank you everybody for the advice. I won't buy the "protection plan" or the VIN etching. I actually test drove the car yesterday and the salesman was a sleezeball. He lit up a cigarette and blew the smoke in my face and I am allergic to smoke and I told him..that guy was a loser!

Tell the dealer this: "Pi$$ up a rope".
These charges are the biggest rip-off since timeshare condos. You are the customer, buy whatever you want -- or don't want. There are thousands of car dealers everywhere and you need to let them know you won't be shy about walking out the door and doing business elsewhere.
VIN etching is the acid etching of the VIN on the vehicle glass. Worthless.
Protection plan is 'God knows what', but probably is nothing more than a silicon wax/sealant and 3M Scotchgaurd sprayed on the seats. Again, worthless.
The factory warranty is more than you will need. Please promise us you will not pay for this crap?

Usually the VIN Etch is the Vehicle Identification Number etched into the windows of the vehicle. The more places the VIN exists on the vehicle the better your chances of gratification if the vehicle gets stolen. However for about $3 a thief can buy an etching cream that will render the etching on the windows no good! What does the protection plan include? If it's an alarm system you could probably get equal protection at a cheaper price after you buy the SUV. So the answer is YES you are probably getting ripped off!

Seems a whole lot of money for as little as has to be done to take care of etching. Now the "protection plan" may be some "high powered" insurance program, -- which or may not be worth that much. They are sort of like "extended warranty" plans, some might be worth it ,-- most are not!

In a lot of places the local police departments sponsor a "registration/identification" program with "etching"-- -- for a nomimal charge, - and they do the work (not the police, but the people doing the program)! It generally happens once a year, - you could probably go and ask if they have such a program coming up in near future! And yes you can buy stuff to do it yourself, - and it isn't all that hard, --- nor is it real expensive! You just have to be cafreful you don't ruin your chrome, - or paint while using iit!

You need to go a little bit more deeper with information. For instance, you only indicated that you signed a contract with your insurance company. You did not mention anything about signing a contract with the dealership. What is the "run around"? Did the dealership misinform you, etc.? Anyways, depending on certain answers to the questions, you may be able to sue the dealership in small claims court for the time left from when you took the vehicle back, as long as there was no other vehicles on the insurance.

If you live in a high theft rate area, I would do etch, otherwise, no.

Protection Plan- you talkin about a warranty? For 700 bucks, that is cheap.

If you plan on keeping the Jeep that long, I would get the warranty. Jeep's dont have the best reputation for longevity, and any additional warranty is a big help.

I had the same deal. I just told them that I'd wait for another car to come in, and they shouldn't do it to the next car. They sold me the original car, which hadn't had that work done to it yet.
It's a great money maker. Don't pay it. If they argue, go somewhere else.
Usually the protection plan is paint sealant and upholstery protection.

I never heard of such a charge but, it sounds silly...just refuse that charge and that should be the end of it. also, when it's time to talk to the finance guy. You make sure you stick to your gun's. They try to add this and that in there and it really brings up the price in the end. I recently bought a Tacoma Truck and said this is all I want nothing added no this no that and the guy just got all quiet on me..lol...be strong!...good luck!

Yes, your getting ripped. You can deny buying those things, as you don't necessarily need them.
