I would say so. I normally give my boss a christmas gift. Only thing is that those normally have to be a bit nicer than usual.

Technically, it's wrong to get an employer a gift. Any gift they give you is considered extra compensation for services rendered. By giving them a gift, you're reversing the role and (if it were a spectacular gift) buying their good graces. Obviously if you're close with your employer, then it would be an exchange between friends, outside the employer-employee relationship. A better idea would be to bring Holiday snacks to the office for everyone.

The only time I ever got my boss a gift was when I worked for a non-profit organization. I gave a small gift to ALL the people in the office.
Now I'm working for a large organization that never gives gifts. Do I want to start something???
You might be tagged a "suck-up".
Although, it is nicer to give than to receive.
Ah.....it's your choice. Let's just say, I'm not and leave it at that.

I always got a little something for my employees at Christmas, if they got something for me, great, but I never "expected" it. This was in retail, they were working for little more than minimum wage. Sometimes several employees would pool their money and get me a gift card or something I'd been talking about wanting.

Yes, but you may get her a less expensive gift since you are the employee.

Most "bosses" don't expect gifts from their employees. If you want to give her a gift from your heart (not just because she's getting you one) it's fine. Don't do it out of obligation. It's not expected and it's not necessary, unless you simply *want* to. (Think as to whether you'd give her a gift if she WEREN'T your employer ...)

If she is getting you one and it is not a big department, I would follow the other's lead. If you do get her one, make it something fairly generic like chocolates, but something you're quite sure she would like (if she buys coffee every day get her a pound of coffee etc). In any event, no matter what you should at least get her a nice card.
