I have some silk flowers in my home...the key is to not have too many. The trick to keeping them dust free is to spray them lightly with hairspray when they are new (always do a test spot to make sure it won't make colors run, and keep in mind that the better quality flowers usually cost more), and when they get a bit dusty, you can put them into a garbage bag, add about a quarter cup of salt, tie the bag shut and shake. The dust will stick to the salt (if there's not too much dust) and your flowers will look good as new.

Not really. They catch dust so easily. Fresh flowers are very beautiful, and they are also disposable. But we have a few arrangements that my MIL doesn't want to throw away. Once a year or so, I put them in a large garbage bag with a quarter cup of salt, and shake them up. The salt "catches" a lot of the dust, and they do look cleaner.

But I much prefer something live and with fragrance. But for someone with allergies, buying silk florals and replacing them every few months would be a good solution to the pollen problems.
