I had a very old Lab who had an extremely dry almost callused looking nose. I adopted him when he was 7. I asked the vet what was wrong with his nose and the vet said it wasn't anything serious but gave me some ointment to put on his nose that helped out a lot. I guess the dry/callused nose is common in older dogs. If your dog is young then I'd guess he's not feeling well.

A dry nose is usually an indication that your dog is ill especially if its always dry. Its normal for a dog to wake up from a nap and have his nose be dry...until he licks it. I woul dimmediately take him to the vet and pay attention to his bowel movements and behavior.

Your dog has not been drinking much. It may be a very bad problem if it has been going on for 2 or more days. You might want a vet to check up on it.

It's an old wife's tale that you can tell if your dog is sick or not by their nose being dry, wet, hot, cold. If he is acting strangely then you know there is a problem (ie. irregular bathroom habits, eating habits, drinking more).

your dog is sick (this is like a fever for a kid). Just like your child, take him to the vet as soon unless this gets better. (if your dog has been asleep, he may have burrowed his nose... it will be cold and wet soon).

i've found that adding small amounts of sand to their water bowls will help this by dilluting some of the fluids already present in their bodies and forcing them to the nostrils.
