I would first do research at IRS's website by downloading publication 557-Tax-Exempt Status for Your Organization to determine the beginning steps you need to take. You also need to talk to an Attorney-but make sure it's one who has experience in forming Non-Profit organizations. Search your states Lawyer referral service thru your local Bar Association for one who specializes. Hiring an Attorney is just as important as doing your own legal research too. One of my favorite legal info websites is www.nolo.com.

check with your local state incorporation department at the sec. of state office. you should be able to file for a non-profit corporation. you'll also want to get an EIN number for a bank account, they are free and you can file over the phone.
