The Crohamhurst Observatory at Beerwah, Queensland is "famous" for long range weather forecasting based on sunspot cycles.

To give you an idea how good their predictions are, late in 1973 the operator of the observatory predicted a droughty summer for 1973 -74 and appeared on television advertising lawn sprinklers.

In 1974 Brisbane experienced a 100 year flood which peaked on 26 January. It was just a meter or so below the highest ever recorded flood in the early 1890s.
