There are several reasons for a cough and there are different types of coughs. The choice of medication depends on the cough. You have to go to pharmacy to purchase the medication anyway, so why not speak with your pharmacist and find out if Robitussin is suitable. It will not cost you except for the medication. Pharmacists are the most accessible health care professionals. They will refer you to the physician if really necessary.

It's better if you can deal with your cough without any drugs at all. Robitussin, Vicks 44, and other drugs like them are actually very bad for you and have been said to impair the immune system while trying to fight off viruses. They don't help you get better. The active ingredient in those syrups is harmful to the central nervous system and doesn't do much more than slightly suppress your cough by slowing everything in your body down; including your brain activity.Take some Cold-Eeze drops. They have natural zinc in them and will boost your immune system so you get rid of that cough faster. Usually a cough is just due to a viral infection, which cannot be treated with meds anyway. If you are coughing up green phlegm, if could mean bronchitis, which is a bacterial infection and must be treated with antibiotics.

Robitussin is an expectorant not a cough suppressant. That means it helps thin phlegm and cough it up. The active ingredient is Guaifenesin. Guaifenesin is in a thousand cold/cough medicine. What you want is Robitussin-DM, It contains Guaifenesin and Dextromethorphan-which is a cough suppressant. You can also use Robitussin-PE with codeine-and opiate cough suppressant. Another cough suppressant is Tessalon pearles-Benzonatate-which is prescription only. So you have Dextromethorphan, Codiene and Benzonatate. I prefer Dextromethorphan myself. It works for me. Codeine is probably better, but it can make some nauseated and drowsy.
Note: I would only use a cough supressant if needed. Such as a non-productive cough that does not allow you to sleep. If you are coughing up gunk I would let my lungs clear themselves. If you suppress a productive cough you can prolong your illness by hampering one of you bodies healing mechanisms.

My doctor usually recommends Robitussin DE or the new cough medication Mucinex. But...if the cough persists longer than a few days or becomes worse, he will call in a prescription for me. I guess try the Robitussin and if you don't get better or get worse , call the doc.

most of the time the doctor just prescribes Robitussin anyway. Most likely if it gets worse he might put u on antibiotic. In case of small children I would get doctors advice quickly before cough got worse.

If you don't want to have to go to your doctor to get prescription cough syrup and over-the-counter cough syrup isn't doing it for you, ask your pharmacist for cough syrup with codeine (pronounced co-dean). They will only sell them behind the counter, so you have to ask them for it. A prescription cough syrup will have codeine in it. That ingredient is quite effective in inhibiting cough.
