Cats have two basic needs, aside from the typical ones you might think of. They are to establish and maintain territories and to get the best rank they can in a dominance heirarchy. Even cats that were born in the same litter go through this. When you introduce a new cat, there will always be some scrapping until they figure out what the order of the dominance heirarchy is. If they are in a house together, there will be some conflicts over territories (chair, spot on a bed or windowseat, who uses which litter box etc.) Once everything has stabilized for a while, things should calm down a bit, even though they may never grow to like each other unless they are litter mates.
As the first poster mentioned they can also be jealous. Probably thi is also territorial, as they try to claim people's love too. They don't really want to see you loving up that other cat too much.

People don't necessarily like everyone they meet either. Some cats just don't get along. They may not be fighting...cat play can get very active and sound quite vicious to people. There is also the question of dominance to consider. As long as they aren't really hurting each other, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

In the cat world there is a matter of hiarcy, meaning there is a dominant male or alpha cat, Younger male cats at a certain age decide to challenge the alpha cat in an attempt to be boss cat.
Or on the other hand you may have a couple of cats that just don't like one another.

They are establishing hierarchy; i.e., who's going to be "top cat." This kind of struggle does not last long and is rarely (very rarely) lethal to any of the cats involved. There will be a lot of hissing, growling, screaming, extended paws and claws, posturing with hackles up, tail switching, flat ears, pouncing, neck biting and chasing. The cat that runs or lays down to defend himself is the cat that will be in the "bottom" of the hierarchy. Once one cat simply sits on his belly when the other cat is showing aggression, the hierarchy is established.
