We have a male 13 y,o, Dalmation, he became ill overnight two weeks ago, the vet gave him a steroid Injection which we thought did the trick, 1 week later he has gone back to being weak tired and cant lift his head again, he is eating ok and drinking but is an effort to do so, he lays with his head hidden in corners and now and again his body jerks slightly, his heart is racing after any slight excersize, his neck is swollen and sore to touch and he cant seem to lift it, we know he is old but from being fit and healthy we wondered if he had been bitten or is it old age, he has been an outside Dog all his life, we have started to bring him indoors now due to the onsett of winter any ideas would be greatly appreciated Thank you,

Hi -

Unfortunately, this is not a veterinary website. The only ones who can answer your questions are vets who can examine your dog. He needs to see a vet again ASAP.

Good luck and I hope he's ok.

I hate to say this but that is pretty average life span for a dog and if he is suffering and can't tell you please have mercy. I just had my Baby put down 3 mos. ago because she was having multiple problems. All breeds and dogs are different and who knows why he is sick. The shot should have lasted longer than that and since he is in that bad of shape I'd call the vet and ask if it's the shot or if he's just old and it's his time. I just know they can't speak and he is acting like he is really sick. Cortisone shots usually make you feel great, so if it didn't something is wrong. Sorry to hear this. Just know he's had a great life and you did the best for him. Don't blame yourself or give up on dogs. I have another one and he is sooooo sweet. Fills a great void in my life. Good luck.

Well, with the average life span of a Dalmation being 10-14yrs old, I say congrats for your Dalmation being 13!

Other than that, only way to find out what is ailing your old man, is to take him back to the vet (maybe a different one? Second opinions never hurt!)
