Inflammatory acne is caused by an infection of 'Proprionibacterium acnes' so antibiotics will work if you have this type. It is usually treated with isotretinoin (Accutane), but but it has a high rate of causing birth defects in the children of those taking this drug.
Nodular Cystic Acne (the type that causes deep scarring) seems to be a progressive form of the inflammatory type. There has been some success treating it with "Clear Light" treatments of blue light (not ultraviolet). Your doctor will have to prescribe this treatment, but it doesn't have the side effects of Accutane.
Comedonal acne, which causes blackheads and whiteheads, is from an overproduction of sebum (oil) birth control works on this type by changing the hormal balance to slow production of oil and increase sloughing of dead skin cells.
