In other words, how many troops are in active service for NATO around the globe?

I would say none.
Kosovo was the last NATO deployment.

To John below:
Maybe I stand corrected. I was not aware that troops fighting in Afghanistan was an official NATO deployment.

Since this was already answered,

Nato's deployment to Afghanistan was done under treaty because of the attack on the twin towers. There is a reason the United States helped to form this alliance fifty years ago and it was not done solely on Communist containment (well maybe it was, but point made)
