Here in Puerto Rico (politically an unincorporated territory of the U.S. subject to the plenary powers of the Congress) the age is 18. The reasoning being that you can serve in the armed forces, drive a car and are considered an adult in most aspects of life. The real reason they have not raised the age is that 18 year olds can vote and the local politicos fear losing the votes of 18, 19 and 20 year old people if they raised the age to 21. This is costing our island millions in highway funding due to the lower age for drinking. Although raising the age to 21 has been shown to save lives, the local politicos care more for being reelected than the lives of our youth. You should see the spineless scum that fills our capitol!

well like the first answer true u can join the military at 18. but this dumb butt doesnt know the facts what a dork! in the military you can drink beer wine and wine coolers (remember those?) on the base at age 18. but you cant buy liquor. now if in other countries you are subject to their laws. so if say in spain on liberty a 19 yr old could by any beverage if its legal there. so that answers the dip stick about the military and as for you, Alcohol is a dangerous chemical. It can hurt wound and even kill. so the main reason is most of all 18 yr olds arent mature enough to handle it! Check the statistics! the pre 21 yr old crowd are so eager to be bad they binge drink and cant handle it. so no i agree it should be 21 because your body's fully grown, your much more older and little not much though, but a little bit more wiser. You have been driving longer also so overall its about maturity

college students by 21 are on the road to graduating and have set some goals for their future. Alcohol is expensive and most 21 year olds can afford it compared to 18 year olds. 18 year olds are not out of the house so mom and dad voted to wait till their 21 so they don't drink all their alcohol!

In Canada it is 19... when I was younger it was 18. I'm guessing that your U.S. Government figures you can fight and die in Iraq... but not enjoy a glass of wine 3 years later. Personally I think 19 years of age is a good age. Hopefully you've been driving for 2 years and wont' be drinking and driving. Alcohol is not better for people at any age but if you're in a war and can die for your country.. you sure as hell should be allowed to have a beer.

It is a case where the lawmakers have failed to harmonize laws together. While voting age and general majority were lowered to 18, alcohol remained at 21.

Your brain and most internal organs stop developing at around 25 years of age. Drinking alcohol before the completion of this causes the internal organs including the brain not to develop and therefore function correctly and efficiently. Though the signs of this may not be visible for a long time, they will eventually catch up to you later on in life.
Hope it helped and good luck on your debate!

Because most teenagers are stupid. Or at least they act stupid. How many times have you turned on the TV to hear of another stupid accident involving teenagers, alcohol, and reckless (speeding) driving.
I know all the arguments. If I'm old enough to die for my country then I should be old enough to drink. Why not be able to do both. If you are in the military they teach you discipline. How many 18 year olds do you know that are disciplined enough to know not to drink and drive?
If I'm old enough to vote I should be old enough to drink. Yeah, so you could go to the polls bombed.

ive seen alot more adults over the age of 30 drive while intoxicated than teenagers...some teenagers would never drive under the influence...all teenagers arent stupid people!!!! i think that if you're under 21 and are married, you should be able to drink.
