If a patient is put on an involuntary hold the stay is typically paid for by the state (this may vary by state though). If a patient admits themselves they are usually responsible for the bill. If your friend really needs assistance I suggest you seek a charity based hospital. Base on his/her income they may qualify for "charity" and be able to receive their treatment for free. It will up to the hospital.

Change you? Not sure where your going with that. They are there to help you...depending on what they need. Medication, counseling, whatever they need. Sometimes just having someone listen is all they need. Seek assistance for your friend. Call your local community service center, or local hospital and they will help you.
It is not s sign of weakness to ask for help. It is a sign of strength!

they charge someone..whether it is the state or individual...he/she might want to check with the doctor. If someone needs to go there is always a way.

it may be covered by insurance, and no they can't refuse, if it is life threatening, but they may not keep them there long enough to do the good they need, which may be worse. if there is no moeny there may be help from the government
