I usually fill about three quarters full; then the cupcakes puff up to make a nice round crown that you can slather with frosting. Yummy!

RE:
When baking cupcakes, how much batter do you put in the paper cups?
I am about to fill the paper cups, but not sure how deep to make the batter? I was going to guess 1/2 the paper cup. Is that about right?

Half way is the rule of thumb for cup cakes. When my nephews and niece were little.. I would bake cupcakes in ice cream cones.
If you can find Comet brand ice cream cones, they work well, fill them about 1/2 full. It was great, they kids would eat the whole thing, no paper to mess with...or eat, as in the case of the little one; I can't believe he did that....

yes and no if you want to clean the tops off of the pan cause it burned half is just little too much. think about if you divided something in half and noticed that yours is smaller than the other and you got just a Little less than half you would be right on the money cause at half the over the top would make a bigger deal out of clean up and just a little less would make it all in the paper holder and not on the top of the pan and they stay moist better if there in the cup deeper cause the top get real hard if they swell over the top

It depends on the baking powder or soda.
If you put a lot then put 1/2
If you didn't add a lot fill it up and leave lik half a cm
