I've ridden AMTRAK numerous times, mostly across country aboard the "California Zephyr", the "Capitol Limited", and the "Silver Meteor", in both coach and first class accommodations.

Unlike the airports, there are no searches or hassles when boarding a train.

True, there is a list of rules, regulations, and restrictions posted at the AMTRAK web site.

But, nobody enforces them, or at least, I've never seen it done.

You can take anything you want aboard the train, as long as you don't cause any problems or disturbances.

You can even be armed - - - just don't advertise it.

Yes, I've seen passengers bring their own groceries and fix their own meals.

So, there's no problem with a thermos of coffee.

Enjoy your ride.

I love riding trains!

I believe so. I have taken whole meals (mmm chipotle!) onto the amtrak, as well as drinks, so I don't see why coffee would be a problem.

Yes. You can bring food and drinks on board... not sure about beer or wine tho, and I doubt they'd tolerate hard liquor.
