There are many undesirable particles floating in the air we breath. In a typical house you would find dust, dust mites, bacteria, mold, pollen, and dead skin cells (among other things). All of these would settle in an open bottle or cup of water. The good news is, you breathe them in every day and they generally cause you no harm.
It is safe to drink water that has been sitting out for a few hours in your own house. You may not want to drink water left open in a public place for a few hours, but it is also pretty unlikely that it would harm you either.

Hi Lindsay, Yes, you can drink water thats been open and not in the frig. for a few hours. Just put some ice in it. You can't drink water if it's been out for awhile. The water will have a smell to it, It has turned bad. If you drinks it you will be sick to your stomach.

If the water is from a safe source, say tap or bottled, sure it is safe! Water may taste stale from standing around, but there is nothing wrong with it. The only water I would not drink is that which may have come from a river or stream as it may have parasites in it.

It's fine to drink if left out, the only times it's not okay to drink is when you've been sick or when it's someone elses.

Well it does taste different after a little while but I don't think it's dangerous to drink.

I would not think it would bother you unless a fly was in it. I am thinking you meant bottle or water in a jug...if so was the cap or lid on it and if not...why not...
