My gum is a bit swollen and its very soft in one spot towards the back of my teeth. It's not where the wisdom teeth come in, but sort of close to that area. It's been inflated for about a week now, and I was just wondering if I have an infection and what I can do to treat it. I'm going to the dentist next week for my cleaning, so I'll tell them about it then.

Sounds like an infection. When you go to the dentist, mention it.

As for right now....don't avoid brushing that area. It may hurt to brush it, but, do it anyway! Yes, it will bleed, but that is a good thing (believe it or not). After brushing, floss the area to remove any exsisting debris from in between your teeth. Next....rinse with a solution of warm water and salt. This will minimize bacterial growth in your mouth and will aid in healing the inflammed area.

The area should be noticably better in a few days if you follow these guidlines.

DO NOT rinse with peroxide! Peroxide is known to cause more damage than good when used alone.

This could be any number of things and may range from an infection to simply an area that you've irritated through eating or chewing.

I would recommend a dentist visit.

If it's hot, burning and looks like a blister in colour then its infected. If you don't get it checked out the infection can spread down into your jaw and be a lot worse. See a dentist as soon as possible.

since your going to the dentist , theres no reason for us to guess whats in there in your mouth.. but as u asked , i think u have inflammation , maybe a sharp thing got stuck in the gum like a fish bone or there's a tartar build-up..
